The intention of this externship, at least on paper, was simple. I, alongside fellow students and alumni, would travel to rural Ecuador to learn more deeply about and provide high-quality veterinary care . And we did. The Amici Cannis hospital is brand-new. It is a beautiful facility, equipped with resources that would rival or exceed many of those in the United States. In some places, you can smell the fresh paint. Day after day, we each performed many spays and neuters on patients from Cotacachi and the surrounding communities. In such a beautiful place, we were lucky to be able to teach our hands the rhythm and intricacies of surgery.

We were meant to learn how to do spays and neuters. The truth is that we learned much more than that.

According to Ecuador's National Statistics Agency, 21.4% of Ecuadorians live in poverty

    </sup>

. In rural communities like Imantag which surround the town that Amici Cannis is in, the number jumps to 94.87%

    </sup>

. In our daily van rides to find our patients, we saw it. In our conversations with members of the indigenous communities, we heard it. The lack of clean water, electricity. The flea infestations. The overpopulation of community animals. The dirt floor homes. The tarp roofs. The stunning poverty. And us, face-to-face with a question – in this context, what did it mean to provide high-quality veterinary care? In the face of so many barriers, what did that even mean?

To me, the great power of this externship lived in the answers to those questions. Amici Cannis impacted my life because it reinforced the power of community partnership and simple intervention to improve the health of pets, people, and the environments that they live in. We went to a community every day with a team member who was Ecuadorian and often grew up or lived there. Each animal under our care received safe, simple sterilization surgery, preventing unwanted litters, improving individual long-term health, and reducing roaming, fighting, and the spread of disease. Our patients additionally received anti-parasitic and anti-flea medication, a simple act that improved their quality of life. We listened to the families of our patients, glimpsed their lives intertwined. In surgery, we spoke Spanish and English with Tufts alumni and Ecuadorian teammates to work towards our common goals. Outside of surgery days, every student participated in the educational community outreach program meant to teach about the benefits of sterilization and the humane treatment of animals. Day by day, I came to understand that true partnership is high-quality veterinary care, and it can transform the well-being of not only patients and the communities that they call home but ours as well. Even through the simplest acts, we each have the capacity to affect another.

Yes, I learned to spay and neuter. But the truth is that through Amici Cannis, I lived, breathed, and learned through the lens of community health and One Health. In turn, I broadened my view of the rooms and conversations that I think a veterinarian ought to be in. In addition to surgery, that’s the real lesson I’ll bring with me through my career.

On a bright Sunday in the middle of May not so far from today, us veterinary students will stand on a stage and recite an oath. We will swear to use our scientific knowledge and skills to benefit society, promote public health, and practice our profession with conscientiousness and dignity. After Amici Cannis, I ask myself: which society? And what does it mean to benefit it?

That’s why we’re always excited to welcome visiting students and veterinarians who travel to Cotacachi to lend a hand, become part of our mission, and experience Ecuadorian culture firsthand.

Many return year after year, some to mentor students, others simply to spend time with our team and continue contributing to our programs. Dr. Marian Schenk shares that, "Working with Amici Cannis in Ecuador are some of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had, which is why I continue to return year after year. Teaching is a passion of mine and watching the students learn and develop their skills as veterinary surgeons is amazing".

On January 31st at 1 p.m., something truly special happened in Cotacachi. After years of dreaming, planning, building, and believing, our community gathered to officially open the new Amici Cannis Animal Hospital. The celebration began with the warmest welcome: tables filled with local foods and drinks generously donated by our incredible sponsors, including Río Intag, Athena Brewery, Coo Coo’s Nest, La Verde Oveja, Kafeto, and many others who helped turn the afternoon into a feast of flavors and friendship.

As guests arrived, the hospital filled with energy. Children darted from room to room, discovering face‑painting stations, coloring tables, and even a dress‑up corner where they could become veterinarians for the day. More than 250 people came to explore the new facility, and each area of the hospital was hosted by a member of our team, who proudly shared the work that will take place there and answered questions from curious visitors. The rain held off just long enough for everyone to enjoy the moment together, neighbors, supporters, volunteers, and families standing side by side to celebrate a milestone that belongs to all of us.

What unfolded that day was more than a ribbon‑cutting. It was the beginning of a new chapter for Cotacachi, a promise to the animals who depend on us, and a legacy built by the hands and hearts of this community. The dream is now real, and we can’t wait to show you the photos that captured every joyful moment.

On March 30th, we celebrated a monumental milestone—the groundbreaking for our new animal hospital in Cotacachi, Ecuador. Despite the looming threat of rain, we were thrilled to see a wonderful turnout of supporters, including both local residents and individuals who have made Ecuador their home in recent years. The event was open to the public, and we were delighted to welcome everyone who wanted to join us in commemorating this significant step forward for animal welfare.

We were especially touched to see families from the communities we work with around Cotacachi come out to celebrate with us. Additionally, friends traveled all the way from Quito, the capital, to spend a few hours showing their enthusiasm and support for our exciting new venture.

Guests were treated to a variety of local delicacies, including artisanal gelato from Cotacachi’s own Incanto Gelateria, delectable cheeses from La Verde Oveja, and locally raised meats from L&S Meats. These generous sponsors helped make the celebration even more special and memorable for everyone who attended.

Of course, we owe the deepest gratitude to our donors in the United States, whose incredible generosity and belief in our mission have transformed this dream into a reality. Your unwavering support has been the foundation of this project, enabling us to create a space that will serve as a modern veterinary hospital and a lasting legacy for animal welfare and the broader community.

To our loyal clients, thank you for continuing to support us and helping us remain sustainable. To the local community, thank you for believing in us and championing our mission. To our dedicated volunteers, whose hard work is indispensable to achieving our goals, we are deeply grateful. And to the Indigenous communities, thank you for your trust and encouragement. Together, we are building a brighter future for the animals and the people of Cotacachi.

The Need for a New Veterinary Hospital for Amici Cannis: Enhancing Animal Welfare and Community Health

Amici Cannis is committed to the health and well-being of both animals and the community. As we continue to serve an increasing number of owned and unowned dogs and cats, it has become clear that the need for a new, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital is vital. This hospital will not only provide essential care but will also allow us to enhance our veterinary student externship program, creating a training center that will shape the future of veterinary medicine.

In 2024, Amici Cannis saw a significant increase in our impact within the community. We doubled the number of animals spayed/neutered and vaccinated, addressing crucial aspects of public health and animal welfare. Additionally, we tripled the number of students that participated in our Be Kind education program, expanding our reach and fostering empathy and responsibility toward animals in the next generation. These efforts, alongside our expanding services, showcase our commitment to growth, education, and improving the lives of animals and humans alike.

Our new facility will feature a 24/7 emergency veterinary service, ensuring that animals in need receive immediate, round-the-clock care. Emergency services are often the first line of defense in saving lives and preventing further harm, and this new hospital will provide the necessary infrastructure to handle urgent cases more efficiently. With the capacity to handle a higher volume of patients and perform a greater number of procedures, we can offer more comprehensive care to our growing client base.

A crucial part of this new hospital’s design is the inclusion of a residence and training center for veterinary students. By incorporating a dedicated space for learning and hands-on experience, we can further our commitment to educating the next generation of veterinarians. The externship program will be an invaluable resource, providing students with exposure to a wide range of cases and medical procedures. This hands-on training will help develop the skills necessary for them to thrive in the field, ultimately improving the quality of veterinary care across the industry.

Our hospital’s growth has been substantial, with a growth rate of 23% in 2023 and an even greater 27% in 2024. This level of expansion is a testament to the increasing demand for our services and the growing trust that the community places in us. However, this growth also means that we need to expand our physical capacity to continue meeting the needs of our patients and the community. With this continued rate of expansion, it is clear that our current infrastructure can no longer support the increased demand for services. A new, larger, and more advanced veterinary hospital will allow us to keep pace with the ever-growing needs of our clients, enhance our ability to deliver care, and maintain our commitment to animal welfare.

The establishment of this new hospital for Amici Cannis represents more than just an expansion of facilities; it is a step toward improving the lives of animals and humans alike. By investing in cutting-edge infrastructure and education, we are laying the foundation for a healthier future, one where veterinary care is accessible, comprehensive, and compassionate. Together, we can build a community where animals receive the care they deserve, and where humans are empowered to be responsible, empathetic stewards of the animals in their lives.

San Bartolo is a small, rural community located on the outskirts of Cotacachi, Ecuador. The community is home to eleven families and a reported 25 dogs. It is a tightknit community with a few adobe houses tucked between fields of corn, potatoes, and chocho. This is one of the many indigenous communities where families live in extreme poverty. Here, many of the families have dogs to help protect their land, livestock, and homes. These families have no access to veterinary care and therefore most of these dogs have never been to a veterinarian.

With a donor’s support, Amici Cannis visited San Bartolo and provided preventive veterinary care, such as spay/neuter and vaccination, to every dog in the community. Prompted by the warm reception from the people of San Bartolo, our team planned a return visit to bring a smile to the children and their families, and to teach them about the basic needs and care of their dogs and cats. We were pleasantly surprised to see how bonded the children are to their companion animals, and that attachment generates compassion in kids.

The importance of a street dog survey

Our 2025 survey results are in!

Street dog populations can be difficult to manage due to a variety of factors, including overpopulation, disease, lack of access to veterinary care, and cultural attitudes toward animals. Without accurate data, it’s nearly impossible to assess the scale of the issue and develop effective strategies to address it. This is where street dog surveys become essential, and why our bi-annual survey is a key component of our dog population management efforts.

Twice a year, a team of Amici Canis volunteers in Cotacachi comes together to conduct a survey in the area where we operate, gathering vital data about the street dog population, such as the number of dogs and their health.

During this January survey, there were no surprises regarding the animals’ body condition score, with 74% of the dogs scoring 3/5, which is considered a healthy weight according to veterinary standards. The population of puppies and lactating females on the streets remains low and stable, with only three puppies counted. The population of intact male dogs (unneutered) increased to 37% in 2025, up from 25% in 2024.

This year, we observed a 12% increase in the total number of dogs seen on the streets, from 192 in January 2024 to 217 in January 2025. However, the number remains stable when compared to the surveys conducted between June 2021 and June 2023, when the total number of dogs counted was 216.

A survey showing a decline in the population of street dogs one year, followed by a rebound to the same number as the previous years, could be influenced by various factors. Some possible causes include:

Shifting population: Street dogs often move between regions in search of food, shelter, or safety. A temporary decline might have occurred if dogs moved to different areas (perhaps due to construction, human activities, or changes in urban planning). Over time, the dogs might return to the original location, restoring the population numbers.

Public awareness: Changes in public perception or increased involvement of local communities in feeding or caring for street dogs could influence the population size.

Epidemic or disease: A disease outbreak (such as parvovirus or distemper) could cause a temporary reduction in the street dog population, but the population may rebound in subsequent years as the disease runs its course or new dogs arrive.

The vacuum effect is a phenomenon that occurs when street dog populations are managed or reduced (through methods like sterilization, adoption, and natural attrition) and the population quickly rebounds to previous levels or even increases beyond the original numbers. Street dogs are territorial animals, and when a group of dogs leaves a particular area, it leaves an empty "territorial vacuum."

Other dogs from surrounding areas, or new dogs, will often move in to occupy this available territory, either because the area is now vacant and suitable for living or because there is a sudden increase in food sources.

These new dogs may not have been in the area before, and their arrival can quickly fill the void created by the absence of the original dogs.

Amici Canis can work in a variety of ways to address the increase in street dog numbers from June of 2024. A holistic approach involving sterilization, community engagement, veterinary care, and public awareness is the most effective long-term solution. Our team will target the areas of Cotacachi that saw an increase in street dogs from 2024, and we will enlist the help of the community in identifying new and unaltered dogs to be sterilized through our Veterinary Care for Community Dogs Program.

I had visited Ecuador twice before and was both saddened and intrigued by the number of street dogs I encountered in the cities I visited. Working at an animal shelter in California, these dogs naturally piqued my interest. I wanted to offer my skills and, at the same time, learn how to better the lives of these dogs. After an extensive internet search, I stumbled across Amici Cannis, an established organization making a significant impact on the street dog and cat population, as well as their health, in Cotacachi. The more I learned about this organization, the more excited I became. They were doing the work I had hoped existed in Ecuador.

What was a typical day like while visiting Indigenous families door-to-door?

Wow, is the word I would use. It was such a fulfilling experience. Depending on what we had in the agenda for the day we would load the van with crates to transport dogs and cats for their spay/neuter appointments, or with supplies to vaccinate and deworm animals in the villages.

Next came the daunting trek to reach the communities. Sometimes the roads were impassable, so we had to walk to the homes we wanted to visit. The staff spoke to these families with dignity and respect, and overall, Amici Cannis was greeted with gratitude.

The children were especially curious and intrigued by what we were doing. Some asked questions, eager to learn how to take better care of their pets. These encounters, along with the Be Kind education program that Amici Cannis has implemented in schools, change how the next generation treats animals.

In what ways do you feel your efforts made a difference in the lives of the animals and their guardians?

I remember visiting one house in particular where the family had a menagerie of animals, including many dogs and cats. When we explained to the woman that Amici Cannis could spay and neuter her pets, the relief on her face was immediate. She expressed her gratitude, saying she couldn't afford to feed more animals and was so thankful for the help.

These experiences showed me firsthand how Amici Cannis' efforts made a significant difference in the lives of the animals and their guardians. The gratitude and relief from the families, coupled with the improved health and well-being of the animals, reinforced the importance and impact of their work.

Ecuador faced an unprecedented drought this year, profoundly impacting communities nationwide. City dwellers endured 12-hour power outages, and in some cantons, water was rationed for up to 20 hours a day. Rural areas were hit hardest, with the lack of rain drastically reducing crop yields. This resulted in smaller, lower-quality harvests, affecting the income and diet of many Indigenous families who rely heavily on subsistence farming.

During our vaccination campaigns, our team visited various Indigenous villages around Cotacachi and observed a critical decline in animal well-being. With fewer crops to feed their families, both people and animals suffered. Dogs and cats appeared extremely malnourished and dehydrated yet continued to mate and give birth to puppies and kittens that struggled to survive.

At Amici Cannis, we provided emergency veterinary care to many animals in urgent need. Many required hospitalization, and before returning to their families, they were spayed or neutered to help them conserve their strength and prevent unwanted litters.

We distributed feed to families who had lost most of their crops, ensuring their animals received the necessary nutrition. Additionally, our door-to-door interventions starting to include deworming treatments to help animals eliminate internal parasites. This not only enhances their health but also protects the well-being of their families. As part of this disaster aid, we also provided families with potable water.

We plan to continue distributing aid in the coming weeks and aim to engage more supporters who believe in the power of helping both animals and people. You can be part of this effort by donating to this project.

A picture of poverty in Cotacachi

Achieving One Health means finding ways to help both animals and people whenever possible. Recently, our team was alerted about an elderly woman living in extreme poverty with her nine dogs. We responded to the call for assistance and visited Ms. Carmen, accompanied by the social worker handling her case. None of the visitors spoke fluent Kichwa, and Ms. Carmen did not speak Spanish. The little they understood painted a grim picture of loneliness and despair.

We explained to Ms. Carmen that her dogs needed veterinary care and should be sterilized. She responded that she needed her dogs to reproduce so she would always have company. Even when neighbors poisoned her dogs, their offspring would survive and stay by her side.

To address this, Amici Cannis will conduct awareness campaigns with local authorities and the woman’s neighbors to stop these harmful acts against her dogs. Our goal is to ensure Ms. Carmen feels safe enough to agree to the sterilization of her pets.

As Ms. Carmen became more comfortable around our team, she invited them inside her dwelling. There, they discovered the body of a dead puppy, no older than 10 days, between her blankets. One of our technicians dug a hole in the ground and gently placed the puppy in it. He then stepped aside to let Ms. Carmen cover the body with dirt as she recited words in Kichwa, part of a ritual she learned from her ancestors.

This Friday, the community is coming together to help clean Ms. Carmen’s dwelling and secure a mattress, clean sheets, and blankets for her and her dogs. With the social worker’s support and Amici Cannis’ assistance, we hope to raise awareness within the neighborhood so that help is sought before the need becomes dire.

Dogs are often integral parts of communities, especially in rural or underserved areas. When dogs are healthy, they contribute positively to community life. The prevention of diseases, and dog population management, are at the center of our work in the Indigenous villages surrounding Cotacachi.

Working in communities historically excluded from essential services demands cultural sensitivity and trust-building. In other words, our team must prove itself to be trustworthy and our services need to be truly based on saving lives, not on judging, or punishing by removing animals from their homes.

To gain access to the animals in each village our team follows protocol and goes the official route, presenting official letters to the leaders of each village, and requesting their permission to visit the community on a specific date. Our approach typically begins with vaccination and deworming campaigns, gradually introducing the topic of spaying and neutering.

we have 4,000 anti-rabies vaccines to eliminate the threat of the disease in these villages. Vaccination campaigns help raise awareness about responsible pet ownership, disease prevention, and the importance of regular veterinary care. They also play a critical role in promoting animal health and preventing the spread of diseases in underserved communities.

The implementation of these anti-rabies vaccination campaigns has allowed us to reach more animals with a dire need for our services. Now our challenge is to secure the necessary funds to meet the growing demand for dog and cat sterilization and help the Indigenous villages live a healthier, more harmonious life next to their companion animals.

In 2023, our team created a specialized learning program for children and named it Be Kind. The program was designed to enhance the health and welfare of dogs and other animals in and around Cotacachi, Ecuador. Beyond that, it aimed to instill humane values and essential skills among students, teachers, and communities. By promoting responsible behavior and safe play around dogs, it sought to reduce the risk of bites and other unwelcome interactions that could lead to health concerns, including potential rabies exposure and infection.

The program was so successful, reaching over 850 children and teachers in its pilot phase, that we decided to increase our goal in 2024 and triple the number of children who received our Be Kind program.

After working with four schools during the first semester of the year, and reaching over 1500 students, our team responded to requests to reach multiple classes at once through a novelty program: a well-scripted and relatable puppet show.

We set out to plan a vaccination drive and incorporate an engaging puppet show specifically designed for younger children. Through local characters and relatable scenarios, the hope is to convey essential information about rabies prevention, emphasizing the role of vaccinations and responsible pet ownership.

The big picture is that the program raises awareness about the needs, rights, and well-being of animals. It educates community members about proper care, nutrition, and the prevention of cruelty. Learning about animals’ emotions, needs, and vulnerabilities fosters compassion and empathy. These qualities extend beyond animals and positively impact interactions with fellow humans.

The Amici Cannis Externship Program is a 2-week opportunity for veterinary students to experience hands-on surgical training and medical case handling.

With the model we have with the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine – Tufts University, externs are partnered with Tufts Volunteer Veterinary Alumni, who are part of the integral training and mentorship of the veterinary student during the first week.

How do limited resources impact patient care and treatment options?

I came into this experience expecting to have some limited resources, but nothing truly prepared me for the exceptional job Amici Canis does with the supplies they have.

There were a few medications we were looking for during the treatment of a dog who came in for suspected anaphylaxis. Having limited options pushed me to think outside the box and collaborate even more with my colleagues to find suitable solutions to help these animals. I have a new appreciation for the access to pharmaceuticals available in the United States.

This experience gave me a new perspective and a well-rounded approach to cases. I truly think we made a positive impact on the lives of animals and the communities who care for them.

One recommendation for future veterinary alumni or students doing an externship with Amici Cannis?

One recommendation that I would have for future veterinary alumni or students doing an externship with Amici Cannis is to have an open mind!

Whether it be trying new high-volume surgical techniques, utilizing a new treatment plan for a disease, or communicating with clients in a new language, I grew as a future veterinarian by stepping out of my comfort zone. The staff at Amici Cannis are all very well-trained and knowledgeable, and I learned so much by asking them questions. Some of the cases seen at the hospital during my externship were new to me, such as distemper and scorpion bites. The perspective of the veterinary staff was extremely helpful when discussing treatment plans and prognoses.

Also, the Amici Cannis team was very receptive to ideas shared by veterinary students and alumni, which fostered a supportive and collaborative learning environment. For example, a patient arrived with porcupine quills in the face and neck, a common emergency in the United States but less common in Ecuador. The veterinarians at Amici Cannis trusted us with a sedation and treatment plan knowing we had treated similar cases at the Tufts emergency room. It was a gratifying experience because it was one of the first externships where I was trusted as a future doctor to make independent decisions.

How would you describe the relationship between the people in the communities you visited in Ecuador and their dogs and cats?

I think there is a common misconception that because there is a large population of street dogs in Ecuador people do not care about animals.

I have found this to be untrue after witnessing the care that community members have shown for their animals. Many people simply do not have access to the knowledge or resources they need to take care of their animals and many people are struggling to even take care of themselves and their families.

When equipped with the tools to provide care for their animals, I have seen people go above and beyond.

How do limited resources impact patient care and treatment options?

The team at Amici Cannis’ hospital are aware of their limitations and the limitations of their clients. What accompanies that awareness is a stalwart "can-do" attitude.

For me, the story of Flocky exemplifies this well. Flocky is a gentle giant, a brindle street dog who came into the hospital with a limp. Bone was protruding from infected and necrotic wounds on his toes and on both hind limbs. There was a part of me that couldn't imagine how you could possibly treat without amputating the affected toes. With limited resources for surgery and recovery, the team decided on a different approach to help the dog heal. Flocky's bandage changes became a routine at the end of our day, providing a jumping-off point for discussions about wound management including the benefits of manuka honey vs regular organic honey (the former not being readily available in Cotacachi while the latter was).

We began to see Flocky's toes heal before our eyes. It was enlightening to see that in the face of limited resources, approach to treatment might look different, but it can achieve the same goals. Amici Cannis sets a different standard: that care be accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford it.

At 3:30 pm on a Wednesday, a new case is logged into our doctors' WhatsApp chat. The case involves a community dog named Chocolate, a brown labrador mix who had already been neutered. The dog was picked up by our team after residents of the sector where he lives called us with concerns about his well-being. According to his caretakers, the dog has been coughing and seems to have difficulty breathing, mostly at night. They also report that the dog coughs for a long time then lies down on the sidewalk and wakes up with blood coming out of his nose. From time to time, they see him limp.

Chocolate has a history of coughing, and his records indicate that he was last treated for a cough in 2022 when he was given medication for the condition. When he first came into the hospital as a new patient, a distemper test was performed, and the results were negative. Distemper is a virus that kills many unvaccinated dogs in Ecuador.

Since Chocolate doesn't have a permanent home, no one could provide additional information about his physical condition, diet, recent accidents, or other types of information that could be useful in diagnosing his condition. Once the case is logged in, our team performs a thorough physical exam, takes head, neck, and chest X-rays, and draws blood for a complete blood count. Our doctors check for abscesses around the upper molars or tick-borne diseases, but the results are all negative. We prescribe antibiotics and medication to help boost Chocolate's immune system and continue with further tests to determine what is ailing him.

When animals get sick, they cannot tell us what is wrong, where it hurts, or what may have led to their welfare being compromised. Animal guardians play an essential role in responding to some of these questions on behalf of their animals. Animals that live in the street and have many caretakers often come into our hospital with no clear reason or answers until a physical exam is performed, followed by abundant testing.

At Amici Cannis, we don't turn any animal away, but emergency care for street dogs can be very expensive depending on the case and recommended treatment or action. This program depends on the support of donors like you. We do not receive any financial contribution from the government to ensure the welfare of the street dog and cat populations of Cotacachi.

In countries like Ecuador, street animals are part of the landscape. Access to veterinary care has traditionally been scarce, and so animals have reproduced without control, resulting in more animals than the number of homes that can properly care for them. The consequence of unmanaged reproduction is that many animals are born in the streets or are sent out into the streets when old enough to fend for themselves.

Amici Cannis is committed to managing the population of street animals humanely and effectively through spay/neuter and preventive care. To measure our impact and determine whether our efforts are yielding the desired results, we survey the population of street dogs twice per year.

Our bi-annual survey results help us determine the welfare of the animals on the street. It’s a way to gather data like the density, physical welfare, and reproductive activity of street dogs. By improving the welfare of the animals, we also improve public perception and tolerance towards them. Shop owners and their customers are not afraid to greet a street dog that is vaccinated and dewormed, and dogs that are spayed/neutered aren’t a nuisance to businesses.

Because not all of these animals will find a forever home, they must be allowed to have a healthy and happy life while in the streets. The good news is that we are on track to fulfill our dream of decreasing the population of street dogs in Cotacachi. For our January survey, we witnessed an 11% decrease in the total number of dogs that were seen in the streets, from 216 to 192.

There were no surprises with the animals’ body condition score, with 77% still at 3/5, which is a healthy weight per veterinary standards. The population of puppies and lactating females in the street is still low and stable, with only 5 puppies counted and two female dogs nursing these dogs.

The population of intact male dogs (unneutered) has decreased by 25%. Our team will continue to target this population as well as the population of unaltered female dogs when patrolling the streets.

At Amici Cannis we invest time and resources to decrease the number of animals in the streets by spaying/neutering any new female or male dogs. We also improve their welfare by providing them with preventive care. We have witnessed an increase in the care of street dogs by business owners and a heightened level of tolerance from clients of those businesses when the animal appears healthy and has a good physical appearance (i.e. average condition score of 3 or higher and no visible signs of skin problems or other physical ailments).

As we continue to spend time and resources caring for street dogs and managing their population, our long-term goal is to decrease the number of animals without a home in Cotacachi, as well as its surrounding indigenous villages.

Amici Cannis believes that to improve the welfare of animals and their interactions with people, a humane education program must be implemented. This should be part of a comprehensive strategy that includes access to veterinary care, advocacy, community outreach and engagement, and government collaboration - all areas that are covered by our work.

In 2023, two of our team members who have a background in education, Mary Hellman and Matias Ruiz, developed a learning program for children. This program focuses on improving the health and welfare of dogs and other animals in and around Cotacachi, Ecuador. It also fosters humane values and skills among students, teachers, and communities, and reduces the risk of bites and other unwelcome behavior that can lead to unwanted health concerns such as rabies exposure and infection.

They all wanted to share a story about one of their animals, and after the class was over, they gathered around Matias asking questions and wanting to learn more. I’ll never forget all those smiles and shiny, bright eyes”, said Alexandra Rothlisberger, executive director of Amici Cannis, after attending one of the classes taught in a public school in Cotacachi.

The street dogs in Cotacachi have an ally. After Amici Cannis effectively stepped in to put an end to the cruel culling of street dogs by local authorities, the organization initiated a program that would provide street animals with the preventive care they needed, such as spay/neuter, vaccinations, and deworming, cover any additional costs such as feed, and ensure they received proper access to emergency veterinary care.

Thanks to our spay/neuter program, we have seen the street dog population decline from around 500 to about 200 in the last 10 years. This means fewer dogs suffering from hunger, disease, and abuse in the streets. Some of the dogs have found loving homes with local families, while others have become part of the community, receiving food and shelter from local shops and restaurants.

Our program is set up to help the community embrace the dogs they coexist with. When there is an emergency, caretakers know to call us and our team promptly dispatches a technician to assess the needs of the animal. Tamia is one of those dogs who needed our help when she developed a skin condition that made her itch and scratch. Our team picked her up every two weeks to check her skin, treat her for fleas and ticks, and give her a medicated bath.

Tamia is now almost healed. Her skin is clear, and her fur has grown back. We will continue to keep an eye on her and all the other street dogs, just in case they need us again.

People in Imantag work the fields, planting, sowing, and growing food for their families. The dogs roam free alongside the men and women, while the cats spend their days and nights hunting mice and rats. Unfortunately, there are no veterinary services in this village, and as a result, animals reproduce without control.

Most families in Imantag already have too many dogs and cats, only because they can’t stop them from reproducing. Coqui’s is the classic tale of the dog born in one of these villages. He was likely born into a home that could no longer care for more animals, and with no options to place the puppies, Coqui and his littermates were put inside a sack of corn and were abandoned in a field. A woman named Maria found the sack and the puppies; all except Coqui had already asphyxiated.

Like many individuals in her parish, Maria has more animals than she can properly care for. She has an affinity towards them and can’t bear to see them suffering in the streets. As with Coqui, she has already welcomed 12 dogs into her home. Without access to spay or neuter services, animals in these villages reproduce with no control, and without preventive care, they contract diseases and viruses that cause suffering and even death.

Amici Cannis is committed to helping families in indigenous villages, like Imantag, curb the number of animals being born in their homes so they can provide better care for their pets.

Our team has visited Imantag a total of four times in recent days, providing check-ups and determining what type of care each animal needs, in addition to being spayed or neutered. It is during one of these visits that our team met Coqui, thanks to Maria’s interest in accessing our services and providing him and her other eleven dogs with the care they need. Little Coqui was neutered, vaccinated, and dewormed, and he is now living a healthy, happy life with Maria and the rest of the pack.

Brindle

Brindle is a pup like many others in Ecuador. Born in an open field in the outskirts of the town of Cotacachi, she grew up being cared for by the children who go to a nearby school, and fed by individuals who live near the field. When Brindle was born, two of her male siblings were taken by individuals looking to welcome a dog into their families. When there is no access to veterinary care, and no alternatives to humanely stop reproduction, male dogs and cats are usually preferred and get adopted more quickly, while the females stay in the streets and continue to give birth to litter after litter of puppies. Brindle was no exception.

When the Amici Cannis’ team was alerted to Brindle’s situation by concerned individuals, the young dog had already had two litters of puppies. While this pup is not aggressive, she shies away from human contact, is fast and strong, and evaded most trapping mechanisms or devices we could think of to bring her into the hospital for veterinary care. Time after time, our team tried new and creative ways to trap the dog and were finally successful in safely capturing Brindle and bringing her into the Amici Cannis animal hospital to be spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, and checked for any issues affecting her health. We are thrilled that our Community Dog program, funded by donors like you, is able to provide dogs like Brindle the care they need to stop unwanted reproduction of litters and start a healthy, happy life.

The children and the many community members who care for Brindle are eagerly awaiting her return to the field where she provides the grazing cattle with safety, and the kids with a familiar face on their walk to and from school.

Rascal had so many health issues and it was obvious from his condition that he had been roaming the streets for the entirety of his four short months of life. We attempted emergency medical intervention for everything from his profound emaciation and compromised gastrointestinal tract to his severe skin wounds.

Using funds from our Emergency Dog fund, the Amici Cannis hospital was able to provide relief and care for Lassie. After doing laboratory tests, it was determined Lassie’s skin condition was Demodex, which is not harmful to humans, but can cause significant discomfort, skin infections and hair loss in dogs. The hospital immediately started treatment on Lassie with medical baths and oral and topical medications. Lassie was in the hospital at Amici Cannis Hospital for over a month, where she had time to heal and be showered with love and care from the entire Amici Cannis team.

In addition to treatment of her skin condition, the hospital also sterilized and vaccinated Lassie with funds used from the Amici Cannis Community dog program.

Lassie made a full recovery! Since Lassie is a Shar Pei, her breed requires extra care since they are prone to skin conditions, therefore returning her to the streets as a community dog was not an option. Amici Cannis Hospital was able to successfully find her a forever home. Today Lassie is living the best life ever and she is loving being part of a family and receiving the ongoing care she needs to stay healthy.

Although Amici Cannis Hospital helps hundreds of dogs and cats in need, every once in a while, a special dog or cat comes along who leaves a huge imprint on our hearts. Lado has one of those stories.

Lado is a loving dog, who despite being abandoned and enduring weeks of pain and suffering, never gave up on his desire to live and be loved.

At the end of March, the Cotacachi Municipio found Lado badly injured in the Intag Valley, a region outside of downtown Cotacachi. They put him in their truck and brought Lado to Amici Cannis Hospital. When Lado arrived at the hospital the doctors did a full evaluation of Lado's condition. His front leg was swollen and unuseable, his body was covered in open wounds which were infected, and he was clearly in a lot of pain. He also was severely malnourished, covered in fleas, and had internal parasites.

The Amici Cannis team got to work on saving this sweet boy. The first two weeks Lado was receiving care at the hospital and being evaluated daily of his progress. After two weeks, one of our amazing volunteers stepped in and offered to foster Lado at her home while he continued to heal. Despite receiving care for the parasites and fleas, x-rays of his front legged revealed that the bone of the leg was completely destroyed by a fungal infection and it would never heal. The hospital team got together and decided an amputation was the only choice to relieve him from the ongoing pain he was experiencing.

Flash forward 2 months later, and the surgery was a success!!! Lado was now a healthy ‘three legged’ dog and was ready for his forever home. According to his foster mom, “Lado was such a good dog! He was outgoing, friendly and loved to cuddle…his tail was always wagging, and his face had a smile”. During the time of being fostered, Lado found his way into the foster parent’s next door neighbor’s home in their townhome community. After many daily visits to her home, Lado found his way into her heart and was soon adopted by the neighbor.

A huge thanks to his foster mom, who opened her heart and home for Lado! You nourished his love with your kindness, and we are forever grateful!

Like many of these un-owned street dogs in the village, they spend their days scavenging looking for food morsels and their nights seeking shelter among the rural farmlands. One rainy evening Perrito was hit by a car and left on the side of the road unable to walk.

Dolores, a local Indigenous woman, was walking home with her two young boys and found the dog laying on the road. Her two boys started crying and begged their mother to help this poor injured dog. She carried the dog home and was in a panic on what she should do with this tiny suffering dog. Dolores reached out to an Amici Volunteer and asked if anyone from the hospital could help.

Perrito was brought into Amici Cannis Hospital and had an exam with x-rays, it was determined the dog would be able to heal from the injuries which included a pelvic fracture. The woman explained this was not her dog and had no funds to cover the hospital costs. With help from Community Dog & Sterilization donation programs, Perrito was able to receive the proper medical and surgical care, as well as sterilization and immunizations.

After two months of rehabilitation and medical care while living at the hospital, Perrito returned to the Indigenous village, and found his way into the hearts and home of Dolores and her family. Perrito is a happy, healthy dog, who spends his afternoons playing with his two best friends, the two boys who found him on the side of the road on that rainy night and begged their mom to save him.

Tigre was a homeless kitten that was just a few weeks old and roaming the downtown streets of Cotacachi. One morning, a volunteer from Amici Cannis was taking a walk and heard loud ‘meow’ cries coming from the street. The volunteer stopped and looked down to see a tiny kitten standing on the sidewalk looking like she oversaw the world! She snapped a quick photo of this adorable little ‘tiger’ cat and, before she knew it, the kitten walked right up to her begging for love. The volunteer picked her up and walked her over to Amici Cannis Hospital to surrender her to their care. She knew this little kitten didn’t have a chance of surviving on the busy downtown streets of Cotacachi. This newly named kitten, “Tigre’ somehow knew it was her lucky day!

Thanks to the Amici Cannis Sterilization program of street animals, Tigre was sterilized, treated for fleas, and received vaccinations. Over the next 3 days, the volunteer continued to visit the hospital to check on tiny Tigre. She would spend time sitting on
