Veterinary Care for Community Dogs and Cats
Community dogs and cats are free‑roaming animals who are unowned. They do not have individual human families. Instead, they live among us and are cared for collectively by the community.
At Amici Cannis, we have formally claimed responsibility for these animals. When we first began investing in the care of community dogs, many were rejected or ignored. Over time, through consistent presence, medical care, and advocacy, these same animals were welcomed and embraced by the town. Today, they are truly community pets; recognized, protected, and valued.
How We Care for Community Animals
Community dogs and cats in Cotacachi are cared for daily by Amici Cannis and supported by local businesses and community members. We invest directly in their well‑being by providing:
- Spay and neuter surgery
- Vaccinations
- Microchipping
- Deworming and parasite prevention
- Collars for identification
- Advanced and emergency medical care when needed
In addition to veterinary services, we ensure community animals have consistent access to food and clean drinking water.
Population Management & Preventive Care

Why This Program Matters
Without this effort, the population of unwanted animals would continue to grow, leading to increased illness, injury, and preventable death. Each year, Amici Cannis invests approximately $30,000 to give community animals a second chance at life. We take this mission to heart. By combining veterinary care, population control, and daily support, we are creating a more humane future for both animals and the community they call home.
Veterinary Care for Community Dogs
Community dogs are free-roaming dogs which were previously homeless, abandoned, or unowned. They don’t have human families, so Amici Cannis has claimed them. When Amici Cannis began investing in these dogs, the community who previously had rejected them, welcomed them into the town.
These dogs are now community pets and are cared for and fed by Amici Cannis and local businesses. We invest in the well-being of these dogs by spaying/neutering, vaccinating, microchipping, deworming, collaring, and providing more extensive medical care as needed.
Without our Community Dog Program, the population of unwanted animals would continue to rise, which in turn would result in an increase in deaths of unwanted dogs. Each year, we invest $50,000 to give community dogs a second chance at life.
